This second volume of the history of the East India Company (EIC) is a tour de force from this experienced narrator. Covering a huge canvas with vignettes of people, ships, battles, successes and tragedies, this is not a history book in which you will find the five reasons why this or that happened. But it is a mammoth pageturner in which the reader is constantly drawn onwards by the unfolding dramas of the time and places revealed. The original sources of EIC ships' logs and letters are mined for their telling detail and revelatory insight, while hundreds of secondary sources were also consulted.
