Naval Leadership in the Atlantic World: The age of reform and revolution, 1700-1850

What is naval leadership? For too long, this collection argues, the answer has been implicit for naval historians, a maritime equivalent of 'we know it when we see it.' Implicit assumption, however, denies the economic, social, cultural and political factors which all affect how a society defines leadership at any one point in time. In Naval Leadership in the Atlantic World, the authors attempt to situate naval leaders from France, Spain, and Britain within their historical contexts in order to tease out the qualities of leadership demanded of officers during the period 1700 to 1850. Rather than offer concrete definitions, this collection serves more as a starting point for further discussions as to the methodology and content of the study of historical naval leadership.
