Virtual reality (VR) has been a long time coming, and high expectations have been followed by disillusionment. In the 1990s, VR involved headsets as large as a wastepaper bin, which could only be used in dark rooms. Because of the lack of computing power, the flickering digital environments caused nausea for many users within a few minutes. Only organisations with the budget of NASA could afford to use it for workforce training.
