Survey of the European yarn fairs for spring/summer 2020

The European yarn fairs for spring/summer 2020 were held in a positive mood, despite economic uncertainties which are affecting the whole textile and fashion industry. Indeed, spinners at the fairs were able to report good sales of yarns for the luxury end of the market-especially yarns for knitwear, as these remained a strong fashion trend. There was a strong focus on environmental sustainability at the fairs and, for this reason, several exhibitors drew attention to yarns made from natural fibres-including yarns incorporating cashmere, organic cotton, linen, silk and wool. There were also many offerings in regenerated cellulosic fibres such as cuprammonium rayon (cupro) and lyocell. Indeed, there is an emphasis on "naturalness ", and yarns for the spring/summer 2020 season are fine in terms of both the raw material used and the fineness of the spinning count. Linen yarns are increasingly important, and some linen yarns incorporate mixes with other fibres such as cotton, wool and silk while others have stretch properties. Viscose and lyocell were prominent at the fairs, and these fibres continue to be used to create different effects and handle. Fancy yarns are also important for the spring/summer 2020 season, but the offerings are more subdued and more subtle than in past seasons. Many of the fancy yarns are in the form of tape yarns, and raffia yarns are also important. Other trends at the fairs included crepe yarns with a dry handle, refined glossy yarns with a romantic feel, and yarns with metallic highlights and sparkling effects.
