World textile and apparel trade and production trends: Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey

Egyptian textile and clothing exports fell by 11.1% in 2016. The fall represented the third decline in succession, and reflected decreases in exports to most foreign markets during the year—including Brazil, Canada, China, the EU, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Turkey, the UAE and the USA. However, there were increases in exports to Algeria, India, Jordan, Russia and Tunisia. Also, production in the year ending June 30, 2016, was up in all the major textile and clothing categories. In Morocco, clothing exports increased by 8.8% in 2016. The increase was reflected in growth in sales of Moroccan clothing in the EU import market and the US import market. Furthermore, sales in these two markets continued to rise in early 2017. Clothing production in Morocco, meanwhile, increased by 5.7% in 2016 although textile production was down by 0.8%. In Tunisia, textile and clothing exports rose by 8.3% in 2016. However, sales of Tunisian textiles and clothing in the EU import market—by far the country's largest market—declined during the year, and so did sales in the US import market. Also, production by Tunisian textile, clothing, footwear and leather manufacturers fell by 0.4% in 2016 following a 4.0% decline in 2015. In Turkey, textile and clothing exports fell by 0.5% in 2016 following a 10.3% decline in the previous year. Nevertheless, sales of Turkish textiles and clothing in the EU import market—the country's largest market—were up during the year, and so were sales in the US import market. Furthermore, clothing production rose by 3.5% in 2016, representing the fifth consecutive year of growth, and textile production was up by 1.0%. However, during January-March 2017 there were declines in textile production and clothing production compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.
