World textile and apparel trade and production trends: Egypt,Morocco,Tunisia and Turkey

Textile and clothing exports from Egypt rose by 1.3% in 2019,reflecting strong increases in exports to Canada,India,Pakistan,Saudi Arabia and the USA,but there were declines in exports to Algeria,China,the EU,Tunisia and Turkey.During the first half of 2020 there were sharp falls in sales of Egyptian textiles and clothing in the EU and US import markets-by far Egypt's two largest markets-compared with the corresponding period a year earlier.The falls reflected the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.Textile and clothing exports from Morocco declined by 5.1% in 2019,reflecting falls in exports to Algeria,the EU and the USA.During the first half of 2020 sales of Moroccan textiles and clothing in the EU and US import markets were down sharply.Textile production in Morocco was also down in 2019 and in the first half of 2020 while clothing production was up in 2019 and during the first quarter of 2020.During the second quarter of 2020,however,clothing production plunged sharply.Textile and clothing exports from Tunisia fell by 6.7% in 2019,and during January-August 2020 they were down by 19.0%.However,exports of textiles alone increased.Geographically,the falls in textile and clothing exports reflected declines in sales in the EU and US import markets.Production by Tunisian textile,clothing and fur manufacturers,meanwhile,fell by 3.5% in 2019 and during January-June 2020 it was down by a sharp 28.8%.Textile and clothing exports from Turkey rose by 2.4% in 2019 but during January-July 2020 they were down by 16.2%.These trends reflected trends in sales of Turkish textiles and clothing in the EU-the country's largest market.In the USA,sales in 2019 rose more strongly than sales in the EU and were down only modestly during January-July 2020.As a result,Turkey's share of US textile and clothing imports from all sources rose significantly in 2019 and it was also up significantly during January-July 2020.Clothing production in Turkey rose by 6.9% in 2019,which represented the tenth consecutive year of growth,and textile production increased by 2.1 %.But during January-July 2020 textile and clothing production in Turkey was down significantly.
