While many people in the industry are expecting foreign operators to come into Brazil and pick up the slack from Petrobras as the local giant has shed rigs left and right, that ideal future may still be a few years out. Some operators, like Equinor and Total, have indeed started on drilling campaigns in Brazil, but these were projects that had already been started by Petrobras, so there was less time needed ahead of drilling. Most of the acreage in the country, both pre-salt and traditional, that international companies have picked up will likely require shorter exploration programmes firs before hiring multiple rigs to do development work, which is when their effect will be felt most.
