Japan's Jera has joined the growing band of energy firms unveiling net-zero carbon emission targets for 2050. The world's biggest LNG buyer will initially focus on its coal-fired power fleet and then gas plants. The ultimate aim is to fuel thermal power plants with 100% ammonia or hydrogen, producing zero emissions. But unlike some European firms, a Jera spokesperson says its target only covers Scope 1 emissions — those under its direct control. The plan is to shut all inefficient coal plants by 2030 and gradually increase the ratio of zero-carbon fuels at other thermal plants, cutting their carbon emission intensity 20% by 2030.
