Inter-Linking of Rivers : A Way :orward to Ensure Food Security am Hydro Power Efficiency

Water is deeply connected with food and hydro power and it is this nexus that needs to be understood for addressing balanced growth and development challenges. Water is also integrally linked with common well being of human. It contributed to achieving food security and a critical bond exists between water resources management, agriculture, food security and power generation. There is a possibility of growing problem of impending food crisis due to damage to the ecology and a shortage of water and fertile land with additional pressure of an increasing population. We had experienced pulses crisis very recently and it still persists. The threat to food security lies in the unsustainable use of water in present agriculture practice. According to available data, presently 60 percent (approx.) agriculture is irrigation fed and after the completion of Inter-linking of Rivers nearly 85 percent of agriculture would be turned to irrigation fed and it would be a way forward towards food security. Agricultureaccumulates nearly 85 percent of the available water resources of the country. Given the paramount importance of agriculture to the Indian economy and food security, irrigation is of primary importance. The most important feature of inter-linking of Rivers is that, the pressure on water wealth of the country would decrease for irrigation use and on the other hand irrigation fed area would be increased considerably.
