FINDING A RIVAL for the New Beetle is interesting - a 'head or heart' decision. Mind you, if choosing with the head you might not pick a Beetle in the first place, when so many other more practical Volkswagens are available for the price. The Beetle is clearly a choice of the heart because it is 'retro' and quirky and so a similar rival has to be found.
