Public transport connections to Carlisle airport could be markedly improved if one or possibly two railway stations were developed nearby, it has been suggested. A railway line running between the city of Carlisle and Newcastle passes less than 5km to the south east of the airport and its owner Stobart is understood to be considering developing a new station. In 2011 the company opened a railway station on a line to Southend airport, which it also owns, to speed air passengers into London.
