Clariant Sells Its Plastics Masterbatch Business to PolyOne for $US 1.56 bn

The acquisition will make PolyOne the world's largest plastic masterbatch producer, well ahead of Ampacet and LyondellBasell. The latter company is itself a fairly recent entrant to the masterbatch industry, following its acquisition of Schulman in mid-2018. (See also T1O2 Worldwide Update, Vol.26, no.l, pages 74-77). PolyOne was created on 31 August 2000 by the merger of M.A. Hanna Co. and Geon Co., two global plastic compounders, headquartered in Cleveland, OH. Hanna had originally been an iron ore mining company, but it diversified into plastic compounding and sold its mining and shipping interests during the 1980s. Geon was originally the Vinyls business of B.F. Goodrich Corp., spun off as an independent entity in 1993.
