After a sharp decline in world economic growth in 2019, there had been widespread optimism about a resurgence in 2020. The intensity of the US/China tariffs war looked as though it was subsiding, some of the issues clouding the outlook for Europe (including the UK's divorce from the European Union) seemed to have been resolved and there were renewed hopes for improvement in the economies of India, Brazil and other emerging markets.
