Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis in the Urgent Care Setting: A Systematic Review

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) was approved in 2012 as the biomedical preventative treatment for HIV. Articles published between January 2012 and December 2018 were reviewed using PRISMA guidelines for research involving PrEP services offered within urgent care and emergency department settings. Of 2,044 articles reviewed, 9 were found to pertain to the urgent care and emergency department settings. Both departments have extended business hours compared with primary care clinics. This study emphasizes the current practice gap in HIV prevention. Nurse practitioners practicing in urgent care and emergency department settings should embrace the challenge and begin offering PrEP services. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
