The regulatory issues surrounding generic drug approval are increasingly challenging with the emergence of biosimilar drug products. Ensuring the quality and integrity of a generic formulation compared with the innovating agent is a more complex challenge in light of some of the patent and regulatory systems used to prolong the market exclusivity for brand-name products. This inhibits the FDA approval of generic alternatives and biosimilar medications.
