The Impact of Statin Therapy on Influenza-Vaccine Response

Statin medications, or hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase inhibitors, have been widely used for their efficacy in lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease in at-risk patients. Notably, statins also have profound immunomodulatory anti-inflammatory effects. For example, it has been shown that among the unvaccinated population patients who take statins have a lower mortality risk than patients not taking statins. It has also been noted that statins suppress T-cell activation.
