Legally binding rules on the co-existence of genetically modified, conventional and organic crops must be introduced in the EU, says the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). This should include a stringent segregation policy and liability rules for compensation in cases of unintentional contamination. The call comes in an opinion on GMOs in the EU, adopted by the Committee in January. The EESC is a formal platform for national civil society organisations to convey their opinions on EU policy issues to the European Commission, European Parliament and EU Ministers.
