For most applications in marine atmospheres, tea staining will be minimised by selecting 316 with a finish better than 0.5 mu m R_a. Welds should be polished with at least #320 grit and passivated by nitric acid. The entire assembly should be cleaned with the same frequency as windows. If the site is critical, a higher grade, a smoother finish, electropolishing or more frequent cleaning should be considered.
