Roads: Bamboo forest land is good, but not to be compared to good forest land. In Wynnad plantations are situated from 2,500 feet to 4,500 feet. And generally the northern aspect for coffee is found the best. When the forest has been cleared, etc., the next work that should be done are roads. These should be traced out at the easiest possible gradient, not over one foot in twenty. And try to get them parallel to each other. They should run about 50 or 60 yards from each other, so that the side drains of the roads act as catch drains and prevent wash. A few diagonal roads also should be made to prevent coolies rushing through the coffee, as they generally take "short-cuts".
