Construction materials demand continues to increase for most areas of the country. The first quarter of 2017 is slightly lower than in 2016, probably due to the unusually good weather in 2016. The last three quarters of 2017 should do better than 2016 in all segments. Surprisingly, construction contracts for shopping centers is up for 2017 despite the turmoil in the retail sector ("the retail ice age"). We do not expect this to last, as it will take a few years for mall designers to create new profitable uses for the space.
