Creation and use of disease-resistant varieties in Guadeloupe: essential elements for agricultural diversification.

In Guadeloupe, vegetable and flower crops used within a programme of agricultural diversification are facing attacks from diseases which are difficult to control, owing to the climatic conditions prevalent on the island. As a result, it would be interesting to develop resistant varieties. The article gives details of work carried out in order to encourage selection against bacterial wilting caused by Ralstonia solanacearum on tomato, pepper and aubergine; anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata] on aubergine and yam (Dioscorea alata); viral disease caused by potato yellow mosaic virus on tomato; diverse fungal, bacterial and viral diseases on melon; Xanthomonas bacterial diseases (caused by Xanthomonas axonopodispv. dieffenbachiae) on anthurium.
