Link breakages occur due to recurrent path breakdown and route findings happened by high mobility of nodes in wireless sensor networks. Route discovery cannot be ignored, since without knowing the route from source to destination, a mobile node blindly rebroadcasts the first received route request packet which causes the broadcast storm problem. Neighbor Knowledge-based Probabilistic Rebroadcast protocol (NKPR) is proposed for minimizing the overhead specifically routing in wireless sensor networks.A new rebroadcast delay mechanism is proposed to find the rebroadcast order and the exact additional coverage ratio is obtained by sensing neighbor coverage knowledge to effectively exploit the neighbor coverage knowledge. A connectivity factor is defined to find out the node population adaptation. A reasonable rebroadcast is obtained by combining the additional coverage ratio and connectivity factor. Combining the advantages of the neighbor coverage knowledge with the probabilistic mechanism reduces the routing overhead that effectively minimizes the multiple numbers of transmissions and will boost the routing efficiency. The proposed protocol (1) generates less rebroadcast traffic than the flooding and some other optimized schemes in literatures (2)Diminishes the network collision and contention because of fewer unnecessary rebroadcasts so as to enhance the packet delivery ratio (3) decreases the normal uninterrupted delay and (4) has good performance when the network is in high density or the traffic is loaded heavily. All these features are shown in simulation studies and the performances compared.
