In one of the industry's more remarkable turns of fate, Egypt's gas sector has gone from sagging to soaring in just five short years. This year should solidify the country's transformation. The LNG importer is expected to return to becoming self-sufficient in natural gas by year's end, kicking off its emergence as a regional gas hub on the back of the Eastern Mediterranean's growing reserves. Production at Eni's giant Zohr development is ramping up, more fields are set to come on stream, and an upcoming offshore bid round is likely to generate heated interest, with imports from Israel and perhaps Cyprus further down the line.
