Russia’s European gas strategy faces the twin challenge of rising competition from US LNG and EU pressure over Moscow’s plan to reduce gas transit through Ukraine. Russian energy minister Alexander Novak met his US and EU counterparts in Washington, DC, this week. The US-Russia relationship remains volatile. The US has tightened sanctions on Russia, but President Donald Trump plans a summit with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, in Helsinki on 16 July.
