Observer fees to rise for much of the industry

Coverage cost: The North Pacific Fishery Management Council, at its October meeting in Homer, approved an increase to the fee that pays for observers and electronic monitoring systems in certain Alaska fleets.The fee hike will apply only to fisheries in the "partial coverage" sector. Examples include the Gulf of Alaska pollock and cod trawl fleets, and the state's individual fishing quota halibut and sablefish fisheries.Vessels that pay for full observer coverage - those that carry observers continually on all their fishing trips - won't be affected by the fee increase. These vessels include the Bering Sea pollock factory trawlers.
