On June 20, 2008 the Scientific Committee of EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) published an interesting document on the safety assessment of botanicals and botanical preparations intended for use as ingredients in food supplements. The terminology"botanicals" includes all botanicals materials such as whole plant, fragmented or cut plants, plants parts, algae, fungi and lichens while "botanical preparations" means all preparations obtained from botanicals by various processes such as pressing, squeezing, extractive, fractionation, distillation, concentration, drying up and fermentation.
