EU member states have decided to partially ban the pesticide 'fipronil', manufactured by German chemical giant BASF, which has been deemed to be potentially harmful for bees. The decision was reached last week in the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCOFCAH), the key EU committee on measures relating to food safety and animal disease. A qualified majority of member states supported the Commission, with only Spain and Romania voting against, while the UK, Slovakia and the CzechRepublic abstained. The measure restricts the crops where Fipronil can be used as a seed treatment.
