Brazilian chicken meat exports hit an all-time record in March

The seesaw nature of trade out of the international chicken meat exporting powerhouses continues with the news that March exports for Brazil were an all-time record. The 363 600 tonnes of all types of chicken - whole birds, frozen and salted cuts, andprocessed chicken shipped was the largest amount ever experienced in a single month. The previous record, of 361 400t, occurred in May 2008. Despite the record, largely achieved thanks to a strong demand for cuts - 212 OOOt, which was 27% more than in the previous month and 22% more than the volume seen in March 2011, sales for the quarter as a whole have not been so favourable. The March surge still leaves 2012 Ql exports just 4.5% more than in the same period last year, which itself enjoyed a 10% hike on 2010 Ql sales. The triumphant pull back from what could have been a far worse result is little comfort for exporters worried that Thailand is on the cusp of re-starting exports of fresh chicken to EU member states after an absence of ten years. Political agreement has been reached for this to happen from July, and the move was ratified by EU health experts (see AE2509, 10.04.12) just two weeks ago.
