US meat exporters are calling on Washington to soften its stance on ractopamine and bow to Russian and Chinese demands that pork and beef shipments are free of the controversial feed additive. But a new report from Canada's George Morris Centre says agreeing to produce livestock without the drug will harm productivity while doing nothing to stop other non-tariff barriers being used to block trade in the future. At the end of last week, China began implementing new rules requiring all US suppliers toinclude documentation showing pork is clear of ractopamine - a beta agonist used to promote leanness in pigs and cattle.
