Panama Canal expansion could boost US grain exports to Asian markets

Expansion of the Panama Canal could potentially reduce the cost of shipping grains from the US to Asia by as much as 12% when it is completed in 2015, making it much more cost-competitive with export rivals. In a report released last week, Rabobank said the expansion project in Panama will boost shipping capacity by around 25% and double the draw area in the key corn (maize) producing states of Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri for exports through the canal by way of the US Gulf.
