Reading comparison of a piezoelectric and a standard surgical handpiece in third molar surgery

The authors set an interesting study with an excellent split mouth design in which they compare the efficacy and safety of the use of the piezoelectric device compared to traditional handpiece. The main outcome evaluated was the different prevalence of paraesthesia, with an advantage in the use of the piezoelectric device. Very important data, piezolectric device is precious, but my question is another: why were the procedures performed under general anaesthesia? General anaesthesia not only isn't mandatory for the surgical procedure of third molar extraction2, but it depends on the preference of surgeon and patient as widely demonstrated in the literature3, but some studies report general anaesthesia as the main source of neurosensory disturbances4.
