Investigation on 1.0 and 1.3 mu m laser performance of Nd3+:GYAP crystal

1.0 at% doped Nd3+:Gd0.1Y0.9AlO3 (Nd3+:GYAP) crystals with high optical quality were successfully grown by Czochralski (CZ) method. In this study, the Nd3+:GYAP crystal was firstly used for laser demonstration with an 808 nm laser diode (LD) to our best knowledge. Two lasers, emitted at 1078 nm and at 1341 nm, respectively, with a maximum power of 8.12 W and 2.36 W, were obtained under an absorbed power of 24.12 W and 15.22 W, respectively. The slope efficiencies of these two laser systems before saturable effect were experimentally determined to be 41% and 21%. Two lasers operated in linear polarization and no thermal depolarization was observed during the experiment, indicating that such Nd3+:GYAP based lasers possess good polarization performance.
