Chronic endometriosis (CE), a state of chronic inflammation in the endometrial lining, has been associated with reproductive failure and is diagnosed based on the presence of CD138+ plasma cells. There is wide variance in CE among infertile women (ranging from 2.8% to 57%) and a lack of consensus on the diagnostic criteria. One proposed reason for the variability is investigators counting CD138+ plasma cells from a varying number of randomly chosen high-power fields or the entire biopsied specimen. In addition, investigators have identified 9 bacterial taxa commonly in the endometrium of women with CE. Using quantitative polymerase chain reaction in combination with 3 diagnostic tools, previous investigators were able to accurately identify CE diagnosis in 77% of cases.
