Due to growing bridge replacement obligations in Canada and abroad, modular bridges consisting of precast concrete deck panels connected to steel girders (see Figure 1) are an increasingly popular solution for short and medium span applications. The bridge construction is rapid and composite action exploits the advantages of both materials, resulting in a highly-efficient, lightweight structure. The shear connection joining the bridge deck and its girders can significantly impact construction time, economic and environmental cost, structural integrity, and durability of the bridge.
