Charge nurses play an integral part in the daily operations of their nursing units and are frontline leaders within their organizations. They lead staff, manage operational processes, and ensure that patient needs are met. Charge nurses positively impact patient care and outcomes; however, they need to fully develop leadership skills to reach their maximum potential as frontline leaders. As clinical experts, charge nurses are often the go-to people for less experienced staff member questions, and they monitor the quality of care and unit policies. When charge nurses engage in observing patients, there's an increase in clinical nurses' positive safety behaviors.3 When charge nurses round on team members, mentor new nurses, and consult on difficult patients, they can assist in the recognition of changes in patient status.
