The US claimed victory this week on triggering a “snapback” of the UN arms embargo and related international sanctions against Iran, but the move is seen as more symbolic than sub- stantive. Despite Washington bandying threats ahead of this week’s UN General Assembly of “consequences” for countries refusing to adhere to the UN sanctions suspended under the 2015 nuclear deal, the US declaration of victory largely rang hollow. The Trump administration’s maneuvers are not entire- ly without potential geopolitical fallout. UN watchers warn future international sanctions mechanisms are endangered, and a return to the nuclear deal became more awkward for a possible Joe Biden administration, should Biden unseat US President Donald Trump in November.
