INGUINAL HERNIA (IH) is a common problem throughout the world. The lifetime risk is approximately 3% for women and 27% for men. This risk increases with age, with a reported peak incidence in males in their 60s. Eighty-six percent of all IHs occur in men.1-2 Although many patients with IH are asymptomatic, bowel incarceration and strangulation are serious and potentially fatal complications. This article discusses the pathophysiology of IH, diagnosis, management, and nursing considerations for patients with IH.
