摘要

THE FOOD sector is in the spotlight - and some say, in terms of what it's doing to our world, it is deeply damaged. Agriculture accounts for one third of global greenhouse gas emissions,1 covers 38 per cent of the world's land surface (a percentage that' still growing), accounts for 70 per cent of water withdrawals2 and 80 per cent of desertification.3 After a period of improvement, the number of hungry people is again rising and is estimated to have reached 821 million, exacerbated by climate-related conflicts and displacement.4At the same time, excess weight and nutrition challenges affect two billion people both in the North and the South of the world, with major risks for diet-related diseases.5 Finally, about one third of the food produced for human consumption every year - 1.3 billion tonnes - gets lost or is wasted at the end-user level.
