Major LNG producers will increasingly need to invest in projects that help solidify demand for gas in emerging markets if they are going to continue to drive growth in the face of competition from renewables and concerns about climate change,industry officials agree.France's Total,which has the second-largest global LNG portfolio behind Royal Dutch Shell,sees LNG demand growing at 5% per year through 2030.That future expansion is increasingly centered in developing countries that currently do not have the infrastructure to regasify LNG and transport gas,much less have well-developed markets of end users.De la Rey Venter,executive vice president for integrated gas ventures at Shell,told last week's Gastech 2019 conference in Houston that traditional LNG markets where established buyers commit to large long-term contracts will remain.But growth in those markets will be”increasingly difficult”to come by,while developing countries will become”the market of the future.”
