Land Sales Reaped More Cash in 2017, But M&A Activity Slowed

Sales of oil and gas drilling rights in Alberta pumped almost four times as much cash into provincial coffers this year than in 2016, although the largesse is relatively paltry compared with the boom year of 2011, when provincial records were set (NGW Jan.27'14). According to Alberta Energy, the latest land sales auction last week added C$18 million (US$14.1 million) to the provincial treasury, bringing the total to C$504 million-a far cry from the 2011 total of C$3.5 billion.
