Since Calpine Energy generated its first kilowatt in 1988, it has aggressively expanded until its 26-gigawatt portfolio now includes 80-plus power plants—almost all gas-fired and operating at a loss. Now the country's single largest gas buyer is selling its assets to a private equity firm, while other merchant generators from NRG Energy to Dynegy are in the same leaky boat.
