By New England standards,the region has had a fairly mild winter so far.But it won't be long before an inevitable deep freeze descends on the region.And just as certain,piped-in gas won't be of much help keeping the lights on,even though gas-fired power-generation capacity is the region's mainstay.Not that New England is about to go dark,Steve Leahy,Northeast Gas Association vice president for policy,told Energy Intelligence.Still,it is a challenge to meet power needs when gas that normally provides 50% of the generation mix is only able to muster 40% in extreme conditions.
