Urologists, like other specialists, are bombarded today by a host of visual media designed to help them learn basic and advanced surgical techniques. In addition to watching a senior surgeon in the operating room, they also have simulators, video and computer animation at their disposal. But sometimes the tried-and-true detailed illustration is the most effective teaching tool. Take the case of BJUI's Surgery Illustrated. Available since 2004, this regular feature is appreciated by readers for its incredible attention to detail and step-by-step approach to depicting adult and pediatric urological surgical procedures. "All of the alternatives-videos, simulators, animation-have value, of course", says Joachim W Thuroff, MD, who has edited the section since its inception. "But, from my point of view, the most didactic way to teach surgery step by step is with a surgical atlas and its related drawings".
