Take the strain: A new fiber optic sensor system has been developed to work with more traditional strain gauges for static systems

Strain measurements are very demanding to the affordability of new autonomous and intelligent materials. For this reason, new technologies are currently in development. A series of tests have been carried out at the Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali (C.I.R.A.) Laboratories in Italy, working with PCB Piezotronics, which compare a new fiber optic sensor system with more traditional strain gauges for static systems, and piezoelectric sensors for dynamic systems.
