The US mushroom industry has grown and consolidated over the past decade. Production and sales have grown, but so have costs, so growers continue to face pressures on profitability. As a consequence, effective and efficient management remains the keyto profit. This translates to controlling costs and maintaining, or increasing, yield.As reported by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the number of counted growers fell from 109 in the 2009-10 season to 95 growers in 2018 while production and sales continued to grow for most of the decade.1 This suggests that while the number of domestic growers contracted, operations got larger and more productive.
