Until the late 1960s, there was little information on food labels to identify the nutrient content. It wasn't until the early 1970s that regulations were imposed that required nutrition labeling on FDA-regulated foods. And it was only in the 1990s that the format of nutrition labels were addressed and the reader-friendly design which we know as the Nutrition Facts Label was developed. Today, many foods include the Nutrition Facts Label, and others like the Facts Up Front Label, American Heart Association's Heart-Check mark, and even more like "fat free" or "low sodium."
