Modification of Ground Rubber with Conventional Fillers by Process Engineering

Carbon black loaded elastomer materials were ground into small rubber particles and covered in situ with conventional fillers like carbon black and hydrophobated silica. The aim of this investigation was a coverage of the ground rubber particle in order to prevent the sulphur from diffusion into the particle. The unmodified and modified ground rubber was incorporated into a fresh unfilled rubber compound. These recycled compounds were investigated with respect to mechanical behavior as well as with imaging methods like light microscopy and local X-Ray fluorescence imaging. Under strain, the ground rubber particles are less deformed than the rubber matrix. Obviously the filler will be detached from the particle surface during the mixing process of the recylate compounds in the internal mixer. The diffusion of Sulphur from the matrix into the ground rubber particle could not be prevented.
