The crystal structure, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the (Ho-0.85 RE0.15)(3)Pd-2(RE=Y and Gd) compounds were investigated. Both of the compounds crystallize in a single phase with a tetragonal U3Si2-type structure (space group P4/mbm) and undergo a second-order transition from ferromagnetic (FM) state to paramagnetic (PM) state. In the PM region, the reciprocal susceptibilities both obey the Curie- Weiss law. The paramagnetic Curie temperatures (theta(p)) for (Ho-0.85 RE0.15)(3)Pd-2 and (Ho0.85Gd0.15)3Fd2 were determined to be 4.9 K and 3.2 K, and the corresponding effective magnetic moments (mu(eff)) are 10.3 mu(B)/RE and 10.5 mu(B)/RE, respectively. Under a field change from 0 T to 5 T, the maximum values of -Delta S-M for the (Ho-0.85 RE0.15)(3)Pd-2 and (Ho-0.85 RE0.15)(3)Pd-2 compounds are determined to be 12.5 J kg(-1) K-1 and 12.8 J kg(-1) K-1, with the corresponding RC values of 228 J kg(-1) and 270 J kg(-1), respectively.
