It is one of history's ironies that most of those regarded as great locomotive engineers spent little time at the drawing board. Think of O. V. S. Bulleid, G. J. Churchward and Sir Nigel Gresley. They had vast responsibilities for all aspects of railway mechanical engineering, including workshops, but could never be expected to carry out detailed design work even if the overall concept of a locomotive might stem from them. The real designers mostly stayed out of the limelight although at least Henry Holcroft attained recognition on the GWR and LNER with his work and later writings on locomotive design.
