Formulation of intervibrator motion and development of a controller for a pulse-drive transmission

In this study, the intervibrator motion of pulse-drive transmission, which is a continuously variable transmission with periodic vibration control, was formulated by solving the motion equation with intermittent driving forces. In addition, a controller for maximum intervibrator speed and transmitting torque was developed and verified experimentally. The controller was developed based on the formulated transmitting torque, which was obtained using the solved motion and measured loss of the electromagnetic clutches. Experiments confirmed that the developed controller maintains the maximum intervibrator speed, which is higher than the input speed, so that the intermittent drive works continuously; the controller linearly controls the output torque with an error of less than 1 Nm. Furthermore, a step response experiment confirmed that the response time of the torque control was equal to the time of a single pulse-drive cycle. Thus, the pulse-drive transmission and developed controller can realize fast response, especially when the pulse-drive frequency is high; this fast response can be used to realize a direct feeling of driving for automotive driving.
